Lubricants are comprised of base oil and an additive package. Additives can make up as much as 30% of the formulated lubricant and often contain elements such as phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), and zinc (Zn). Industry experts have long used a simple analysis technique called X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to measure these elements and ensure that blended lubricants meet the required specifications.
